Episode 003: Breaking It Down [VIDEO]

Well, finally I can breathe a sigh of relief!  I am up and running again in spite unforeseen challenges.  WHEW!  With a newly built computer and software upgrade…I’m in business again.  AMEN!

Thanks for sticking with me! This is a milestone video for me also; it is the last one where I am talking about what the series will unfold.  Then the next one is where the fun starts!  I just had to take these 3 videos, a combined total of about 30 minutes, to prep you for what’s to come.  Didn’t you want to know anyway?  I, myself, like to know what lies ahead.  It’s like getting a syllabus for a college course or a road map for the trip!

I just got back from my first FGS conference and I also have a backlog of data entry for my genealogy software since my computer was down.  All in good time right?  I do have one link to share.  That is my new blog (that’s short for “web log” for you newbies) and I am using it to share information with others about my personal research and also to act as a sort of research log for me to refer to when I need to.   I’m considering covering how to make one for yourself as a lesson for Relatively Speaking {RS}.

Come visit Keeper of the Records.  My most recent post there is an inspiring video on a cemetery I finally got to visit for my 3rd great grand aunt. For now, enjoy watching the latest and stay tuned for the next one!

Episode 002: Is This Series for Me and What Will I Learn? [VIDEO]

http://www.relativelyspeaking.tv/media/Episode%20002_%20Is%20This%20Series%20for%20Me%20and%20What%20Will%20I%20Learn_.flv

In this video you’ll hear some of the different reasons why people would want to know more about their ancestors – some of them you probably wouldn’t have guessed!   Then a list of other skills we need to learn in order to put the  pieces of the puzzle together in our family tree.

I caught an error in this video after it was finalized and decided to make mention of it in the show notes.  In defining Genealogy, I meant to say that “the Greek words were derived from the Latin words” and then their English meaning.  My words in the video were “translated into”.  Note to self: must be careful with choice of words!

Episode 003 is already taped and ready for editing.  It covers the subject areas I’ve outlined – in a very broad sense.  We’ll get specific as we progress.

This summer my husband, Chris, and I celebrated our youngest child’s graduation from high school.  Three out of our five kids are still living at home, but we feel a huge sense of freedom!  This week we are headed out on a road trip for a little over two weeks.  Some of the fun will be doing some research.  We will spend some time in Fort Wayne, Indiana at the Allen County Public Library.  Three whole days to spend in the library – what an exciting vacation! (Really, that was not sarcasm.  Only a few of you will relate to this enthusiasm!)  The other research we’ll do will be for a few days around Ottumwa, Iowa where Chris’s parents are from before attending a cousins wedding.  We are so excited and have video camera ready to roll!

I am sure I will be able to speak to some staff about the library’s resources for genealogists, so I’ll be sure to share this with you in a future episode.  In the meantime, click on their link above and explore their genealogy section!

Later,

;-)

Joanne

P.S.  See how you’re getting valuable resources just from reading the show notes?  These hot links are not mentioned in the video!  Sometimes I like to drop a few in here just because you took the time to visit the site!
